My husband is from Pakistan, and was here to receive his amount. After his degree he wanted his masters, but his visa was soon to expire. So this is what we did so far...
1) We get a marriage license
2) got married
3) filed paperwork
4) we have an interview with USCIS
5)He received a social security number for working purposes only

It's be only 10 months since we exchanged our vowels.

My wife was from the ROC (Republic of China AKA Taiwan). She be here on a F-1 visa doing post graduate work.

8) she got a stamp surrounded by her passport making her a permanent resident
(now you have conditional permanent residence)

11) she had interview
12) she got epistle to go to ceremony
13) she became a citizen

This was a quantity of years ago but we have helped others in the interim and it is still totally similar. The address of where you send things has changed and who have jurisdiction over what. but from your point of view it is still pretty much the same! Good Luck!
