I entail to know just about This 'Visitor Visa'?

I live in Australia and I'm going to visit friends and family within america shortly. I was told that if they were to write a formal letter inviting me to stay next to them that i would be able to stay for 6 months, Is this true or not?

The US doesn't use an invitation system for visas.

If you're an Australian citizen, you're able to use the Visa Waiver Program which allows you to spend up to 90 days in the US without applying for a visa. If you aspiration to stay longer than 90 days you'll have to apply to a US Embassy or Consulate in Australia for a B class tourist visa.
no, it is not true, the US does not function as many countries do.
so the invitation does not stand.
if you are an Australian citizen? consequently yes you may go to the US, but if only a resident? you will need a visa to enter the US;

You can use a visa waiver and stay for 90 days, no more. If you apply for a tourist visa you may be able to stay for 6 months but since you are coming from a visa waiver country you would have to convince the Embassy and the immigration officer that you are not planning to live surrounded by the USA. Even with a visa you could be refused entry or could be allowed to stay for a couple of weeks.
