"common sponsor" responsibility lower than I-864?
I am filling I-864 as joint sponsor for my freind who bring his mother to the US. He is currently not working, my query is :
- If he find a job and have sufficient income above poverty guideline, am I still responsible for mean-tested benefit, if her mom applys for such benefit? In other word, government first coming after him as primary or not?
- What is my maximum liability ($$ figure) as common sponsor?

Honestly? I would not do it!! He might be a great friend now but as soon as his mother is here and you are responsible for them he can screw you! That is very unsafe and you can lose big!
Being a cohesive sponsor is a serious undertaking. You will be responsible for all of their medical, living, clothing and medical needs for a ten year period of time. If they secure benefits from the government, you are responsible to pay the government support... Very serious matter. Think it over. It could amount to thousands and thousands of dollars over the ten year time frame.
There is no maximum liability. You are just as responsible as the other joint sponsor.
