Where within the USA are interviews for British Passports done?
My 16 year old son was born in California, USA and he is a British citizen because his father be born in England and was married to his mother when he was born. He immediately needs to apply for his first UK passport (he has held a US passport since age 6 months).
I do understand the application have to be mailed to Washington D.C. and an interview is likely to be required. The website says interviews are required but does not utter where they are done. We live in San Francisco and can't afford to travel to Washington D.C. We hope interviews can be done in California.
Answers:
Actually I don't regard as it's "likely" to happen, I was looking at the site this morning and it said in effect they ask when they are concerned going on for identity theft or irregularities in the application.
Given his age I wouldn't be too concerned, but if you have to walk it is at the Embassy in Washington, the Passport production center...
Here's what it says:
(MY emphasis).
From 01 August 2007 the North America Passport Production Centre will be introducing compulsory interviews for SOME applicants who:
o Are applying for a British passport for the first time...IF an interview is requested, applicants will be required to supply full documentation. … This has become essential to:
o Establish your eligibility and entitlement to a British passport;
o Prevent other people impersonating you and using your identity to commit fraud…
The interview has a essential role within the passport application, in ensuring that customers are the rightful owners of that "identity.”
Once the North America Passport Production Centre have received a fully completed application they will establish that the customer’s identity exists and that they are entitled to a British passport. -->IF<--- a customer requires an interview he/she will be notified accordingly and given a date, time and location to attend.

So that seems to articulate there are other locations. In the case of a 16 year old claiming citizenship by descent it's unlikely they are going to ask for an interview. And while they read aloud all interviews are at the Passport center, I suspect they make arrangements sometimes. I'd be sure to include color copies of the photo page of all of his US passports.
Worst comes to worst you engineer a trip to Washington "some day" or take a family vacation to Britain and apply here --
But his identity is not at question with his US passports and be sureyou include all of this:
If you be born after 1 January 1983 outside the UK you must provide:
* your full foreign birth certificate and
* a photocopy of your current photo ID (foreign passport or residence card and driving licence) and
... * your father’s birth certificate or registration/naturalisation document and marriage tag and
* a marriage declaration completed by your parents and
* divorce documents (if applicable)
* and the passport used to enter your country of residence (if applicable)
I would call the British Consulate General surrounded by San Francisco for information on this issue. They might be able to process the passport for your son.
