I expect I would have done exactly what my ancestors did, and what most immigrants do, I would tend to pick a place that reminds me of home. Many of the Scandinavians chose the Northern Midwest, the Germans the upper main areas of the country, etc. Most immigrants start out doing manual labor until they can learn the spoken communication and customs. They always have anyway. Unless one can find a place that already has a community if ancestors who speak the language. If a new immigrant can find that they may also find a market for the skills they used contained by the "Old Country".
