Can I stay outside Canada over 3 years for getting a PHD surrounded by US while have a Canada Green Card/PR?

I landed in Canada on 7/10/2006 and "activated" my Canada Green Card/PR. I stayed there for 5 days after came back to the US to study for a PHD. The PR is going to expire on 7/10/2009 because I never entered Canada between that time. I still can't draw from my PHD after that time. So now I want to know if I can stay out of Canada for more than 3 years because that I'm studying in the US.
After I get my PHD, can I still brand name my Canada PR still valid?

Keeping your eternal resident status

Your permanent resident status allows you to live in Canada, but there is also a time stricture on how long you can live outside the country. To keep your status as a permanent resident, you must live in Canada for at most minuscule two years within a five-year period.

For further information on residency obligations, please see Appendix A of Applying for a Permanent Resident Card, which can be found lower than Find an Application Form or Guide in the I Need To… section of this page.
Losing your permanent resident status

There are several ways you could lose your unalterable resident status:

* A permanent resident who does not meet their residency obligations could lose irreparable resident status.
* If convicted of a serious crime, a permanent resident may be deported from Canada.

You must meet the residency obligations surrounded by order to keep your PR status in Canada. In your current situation you will be not sufficiently expert to do this and your PR status is in jeopardy. Source(s): PR in Canada
You are allowed to be outside of Canada for up to 1095 days in any 5 year period. If you go above that, you lose your PR. They don't really thought why you are in the US. They just figure that if you choose to live somewhere else for that long, you own abandoned your PR status. You can apply for PR again though but wait until you finish your PHD. If you already got PR and consent to it expire by not living in Canada, they might feel you are wasting their time applying for a new one right away.

NO The PR status CANNOT be kept valid.
If you STAY out of Canada for more than 3 years, you WILL lose your PR status.
Is there any passageway you can transfer your PhD studies to a Canadian university?
