Difference between former immigrant and today's immigrant?

What are some reasons (for wanting to come to the U.S) that are different between today's immigrants and immigrants surrounded by the past?
Answers:
I believe that the reasons are generally the same: immigrant now and in the past are surrounded by pursuit of freedom, opportunites, and the American dream.

However, there are differences. The immigrants who founded our country had pride within it. And immigrants today (some, not all) are in pursuit of freedom, yes, but they also now that next to the broken wellfare and border security systems that plague our country they can pretty much mooch off others.

But don't get me wrong--I'm not an immigrant hater, immigrant founded the great country I'm proud to live in today. But there does need to be a system contained by place to take care of the problems with dishonest immigration.
I'm writing from Canada's perspective:
MY parents were immigrants in yesteryear, I was born here and most of my friends are immigrants. I know the issues on all sides, except not much something like the Mexicans/Americans issues which may include different issues which other answerers will talk about.

I'm writing from Canada's perspective:

In the past, it be to settle, for better or worse. Many immigrants came with the intent to stay, and they outstandingly rarely or never got to visit their artistic homeland again. In the past, they came and they had to tough it out, minus help from social security or programs for new immigrant or English language programs. There was discrimination against any wish for immigrants. They had to work twice as hard to procure a chance to do half as well.

In the present, to go and get a job, send money back to the home country, or freshly stay for a while and benefit, then go back. In the present, they come and step, visit the homeland often in some cases, every year. In the present, near are so many programs to help new immigrant, and all kinds of courses for English language. In the present, here is reverse discrimination, they are given extra priveleges that hard-working and patient non-immigrants don't acquire
Immigrants of the past wanted to come to the USA to work strong and make a decent life for themselves. Immigrants of today want to come to the USA to nouns up on all of the gimme programs.
Very simple answer. VERY simple. A hundred years ago, immigrants flooded America to become AMERICANS. To assimilate and help make the Nation a better place for ALL. To be an integral cut of shaping a land to be the greatest civilized place in the world. Today's immigrants, for the most segment, though some still have the ideals of what it means to be an American, don't give a rats aft about becoming a REAL American. They don't want to assimilate, don't want to learn the language, don't want to become an integral cog of it. They don't care if America stays strong, stays safe, and continues to better itself. Hell, they don't even care if America get blown off the globe, as long as their not here when it happens. They are here to variety a dollar, send it back to the mother land, and suck up as much social assistance as they can while the getting is still fitting. They Love their mother land more than the Nation that is supporting them and keeping them and their families wager on home (if there are any left behind) alive. They wont pick up a weapon in their own estate to make their own paradise, so why would they support or defend this one. Once they enjoy succeeded in destroying the support systems, school systems, and economical systems meant to assist and coach Americas own, and it becomes just like their own homeland, resembling mexico, they will simply leave and go home. Unforunately, the REAL Americans will be left beside the results. Oh well. If we are dumb enough to continue to tolerate it happen, once again, we will get what we deserve.
the reasons are still the same poverty and opportunity for a better enthusiasm. immigrants during the industrial revolution came from western europe, seeking employment and opportunity fro self-advancement. also some came from japan to work within sugar cane fields in hawaii. immigrant from to day come from all over the world, some seeking political asylum but mostly for jobs. the illegitimate ones mostly come from latin american (52%mexican) contries that are poverty stricken.
People want to come to the U.S. many time because of subjugation in their present country, to make a better life for their family, and some to take advantage of the benefits we have here.
The difference between bygone immigrants and today's immigrants is that in the recent past immigrants were proud and did not try to take help of all the "freebies" the U.S. had to offer. They be hard working people who tried to better themselves and contribute as well as clutch for our society.
fewer are coming here for religious or political freedom. usually economic and the streets are cobblestone with cheese stuff now.

Past immigrants were coming here to escape oppression, to enjoy a better life, and become part of the melting pot that made America great.

Today's immigrant are like locusts, taking all they can get, and sending it stern to their homeland. Not caring to join our way of time or paying taxes, or learning English...

biggest difference:
today's immigrants are 98% mexican.
here comes the thumbs downs.
Past immigrants come to the United States to become United States citizens. They worked twice as hard to achieve the American dream and to assimilate into our society. Today immigrants lately come here with their hands out wanting our government to hold care of them, all the while not even making an attempt to assimilate into our society.
today's immigrants come to america for jobs, better living conditions, lessons ( but many are just claiming their ancestors land)
