When properly adopt by a US citizen, do you become a unalterable resident?

I know you eventually become a US citizen, but do i become a permanent resident until i become a US citizen?
Answers:
Well, the US parent would have to file an I-130 immigrant petition for you first. Normally a child adopt by a US citizen would be immediately eligible for citizenship if under the age of 18 at the time the petition was approved and processed, or the visa be issued and used to enter the US, if overseas. I imagine in your case you be not an orphan when you were adopted, so you have to be under the care and supervision of your parent for 2 years before a petition could be file. Have they, in fact, filed a petition for you? You don't carry citizenship or legal permanent residence until a petition is filed and approved, and you are processed for loose change of status. Considering how long it takes to actually process and approve a petition, you may already be 18 at that point, and in that crust you would be given permanent resident statusand it would be another 5 years before you could qualify for citizenship.
Only adoption of a child under 16 can give support to him/her to become a lawful permanent resident and then a USA citizen.

Adoption of an mature does not have any immigration consequences. Source(s): www.law-visa-usa.com
