Many immigrants work harder and do work which Americans won't do. Such as picking fruit, tarring roofs, delivering refrigerators (my husband does this and everyone there is an immigrant).
They also contribute to our cutback in a large way. If you survey "A Day without a Mexican" you will see the effect it has on our cities when the immigrants dissapear.

Also, diversity of our country have always been a proud thing to us, until lately. I'm not sure where the modern backlash comes from.
Diversity is what made our country design the technologies it has as all right as have the inginuity we call "american" - if it weren't for all the different ways relatives did things when they came to America, we would have never become such a successful nation. The differeces helped us design better ways to do things (such as assembly lines, inventions, etc.)
