Acquiring U.S. citizenship through ex-citizen father/grandparent/half sister?
The title says pretty much it all.
In the world of entangled and complicated immigration law I'm trying to find out if I'm eligible to acquire U.S. citizenship through my father, who was born and raised on U.S. soil and has lived in that for at least 30 years before moving to Europe and naturalizing himself Swedish and at matching time abolishing his American nationality. His change of citizenship occur before my birth.
I'm myself born in Sweden to (obviously) my father and a Finnish mother. I carry passports from both countries.
Both my caring grandfather and grandmother (deceased) are/were U.S. citizens from birth and lived in the United States all their lives.
I also have an developed half sister on my father's side who has been living surrounded by the country for her entire life.
Worth noting: I'm turning 18 in January 2009, will this affect my likelihood of becoming citizen?
Thanks a lot in advance!
Answers:
you can simply acquire US citizenship through your parents... not through your grandparents or siblings. unfortunately for you, your father lost his american citizenship before your birth. for him to be able to dispense you US citizenship, he would need to be a citizen himself.
your half sister though will be able to apply for everlasting residency for you... but it takes about a decade. once you're a permanent resident, you can after apply for citizenship after 5 years of living here.
