Why can't my friend from England draw from her permit/license?
My friend from England is Legal here in Maine. She can not get her permit, or her license. She is outdated enough and everything, but why cant she get it. I know it has something to do near her being from England but I don't know what, because she is 100% Legal.

How old is she and what kind of visa does she enjoy? Does she have more than a year left on her visa? Is she over 18? Has she checked with the state DMV to find out what she requests to do to get a license? Are you sure she really is legally resident? If she is on a tourist visa or Visa Waiver Program, etc, she may be here legally at the moment but she cannot take a drivers license because she does not have more than a year left on her visa.
To have a license, she needs to be here for reason other than as a tourist - ie she needs to be a resident in Maine. State and Federal definition of "resident" differ. She needs to be a resident of Maine in order for her to apply for a license. Also, she requirements to apply for and obtain a social security number or an Alien number to sit the test. If she is a non-resident (state definition; tourist/visitor) later she can still drive using her UK permit. However, it would be better if she has the photo permit fairly than the non-photo variety. I think you are not getting ALL the facts correct in some way, as we are have some lengthy issues in getting my daughter her DL but with the items surrounded by the first paragraph there is no problem.
IM FRM THE UK(LONDON) When i came i could not get hold of mine because i had points on my license(in the uk) they never told me this but this is what i was told when i asked dvla (= to dmv in the us)...she also might not enjoy a social security number or alien number....tell her to give dvla a call for to find out whats hapening (she can use her u.k license if she has 1 too) Source(s): Experiance
