Denied Access to foreign country?
Hi there I have a quick interrogate for you.
Have you ever landed in a foreign country (with a valid visa) and there denied entry?
My quiz arises from the fact an Italian friend of mine flew from Italy (with Italian passport) last minute to Australia. Upon entry he was asked within non polite manners a series of question such as "why did you buy the ticket at the very last minute?" and so on from a amazingly cocky official. The funny thing is that my friends does not speak English very and he have some trouble understanding the East Indian accent of the officer : ) After 30 min of harassment he refuse to answer but he eventually was let go. Could he enjoy been detained longer or deported?
Answers:
A visa does not guarantee entry to another country, it only allows you to present yourself at immigration and request entry. Immigration officers can ask anything they resembling. They have the final say over admittance. Flying alone on a ultimate minute ticket to a country where one does not speak the language is a valid reason for immigration to press his intent.
The immigration officer had every right to detain and deport your friend if he so wished. Your friend would then hold had to pay for a one way ticket rear legs to Italy.
The immigration officers accent is nothing to smile nearly, he is a citizen, doing his job of protecting his country's border. Since your friend does not speak English well I'm sure his accent is worse but the immigration officer manage to understand him.
In your friend's case he was not " denied access". Border official have the right to detain anyone that seems out of sorts to them. There are many "red flags" and second minute tickets is one of these. It suggests a possible flight from the law or other purpose that may be other than tourism. The problem here is more a communication one than anything else.
