Illegal immigration during World War Two?
I couldn't find any articles referring to illegal immigration during World War Two. Do you know of any helpful sources?
And yes, I already tried looking them up myself.
Answers:
I don't think at hand was any - they had a program for mexicans called the bracero program. I expect Chavez helped get rid of it.
Hard to believe but that was a time when this country followed the rule of regulation.
A good book on US immigration is Alien Nation by Peter Brimelow.
From Wikipedia:
Operation W e t b a c k was a 1954 project of the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) to remove just about three million illegal immigrants from the southwestern United States. It focused on Mexican nationals.
History:
Burgeoning numbers of dubious aliens prompted President Dwight D. Eisenhower to appoint his longtime friend, General Joseph Swing, as INS Commissioner. According to Attorney General Herbert Brownell Jr., Eisenhower had a sense of urgency about illegal immigration upon taking department. In a letter to Sen. William Fulbright, Eisenhower quoted a report in The New York Times that said, "The rise in unendorsed border-crossing by Mexican 'wetbacks' (rooted from the watery route taken by the Mexican immigrants across the Rio Grande) to a current rate of more than 1,000,000 cases a year has be accompanied by a curious relaxation in ethical standards extending all the means of access from the farmer-exploiters of this contraband labor to the highest levels of the Federal Government.
The operation was modeled after a program that put pressure on American citizens of Mexican ancestry to move to Mexico during the Great Depression because of the impossible economic situation in the United States. Source(s): History
It didn't start out as illegal, but when the Bracero Program finished some remained behind because it was good money to be made. That is when Eisenhower started his Operation W**Back program. He manage to get rid of all of them.
Also A little known reality about Chavez, he didn't care for illegals being here himself. So he took module in having them removed. This way the permissible workers who were here made better wages, and didn't have to compete against any illegals.
I think you got it wrong, during WW2 there be a severe shortage of men in the country, so the government started what was call the "bracero program" that consisted of getting men on a temporary basis from Mexico and other Latin American countries. After the war be over and our servicemen started to come home, then the government started the program "w e t b a c k" and sent them all rear legs, of course with a big "Thanks".
Here's an idea: Look it up within the archives of a magazine that was published then and still exists today, like "The New Yorker Magazine" or "National Geographic." If here were articles published, you should find them in these bigger periodicals. How 'bout this one: "Atlantic Monthly" ? Hope this help you. Good Luck!
i believe they called it operation w e t b a c k. they deported all unsanctioned so that our service men will have jobs. we need to do it again.
