How do you I step more or less waiting for my visa number inside the US?
I have received my i797 notice (approved petition); I'm currently in the UK on holiday visa right presently (am South African citizen). Would I be able to wait for my priority date (april 2008) to become current while I'm in the US? (instead of waiting within South Africa)?

You'd just be able to visit the US on any visa currently available to you, and you'd only be capable of stay in the US for as long as that visa allows.
Having an active visa petition does not change your eligibility to remain within the US from what it currently is.
