Entered US beside Immigrant Visa, how to receive everlasting Green Card?
My parents have applied for permanent residence abroad, and own recently entered the US on immigrant visa. It is attached to their passports, valid for a year; it also stated that the visa will expire on October 12.
What do they need to do to get hold of their permanent green cards? Do they lose their PR status if they do nothing? Thank you,
Answers:
they should have already received the cards surrounded by the mail, they need to make an infopass appointment and run to the nearest immigration office to inquire if the cards have been mail or if the cards may have been lost in the letters. the immigrant visa is the same as the green card, with the exception that the visa is temporary evidence of status. when processed in a foreign country it is called an immigrant visa when processed in the u.s. it is called adjustment of status. they will not lose their status but may hold to apply for a replacement card with the form I-90.
They must apply for conditional green cards. If these are approved, they must wait two years before they can petition for removal of conditions and consequently get a permanent green card (legal permanent residence).
