It is exceedingly difficult to tell an illegal alien from a legitimate immigrant who enter America the right way which is why the whole idea of forbidden aliens is so unappealing to the vast majority of American and the world for that matter. The first step is to step with the percentages like some of the other answerer's mentioned. For example, if you saw a Suburban on the highway beside 25 people in it odds are dutiful that they are illegal aliens. It's pretty simple stuff actually.
There is no surefire way for the average person to make clear to if someone is illegal due to the fact that some have endorsed driver licenses, work normal jobs (meaning they are not day-laborers), can hold bank accounts, own houses, etc. There is no particular "look" either. We hold illegal immigrants from Canada, too. There is no way to detail by race/gender/religion/ etc etc
Americans come from various different ethnic backgrounds so you can't judge those that are different from the majority to be non American.
However, the only way to know is for the authorities to do a background check of some sort.
