Can we conditional stop one a undying resident?
I'm a U.S permanent resident (green card). However my grandmother is really sick, I need to go rear legs to my coutry to take care of her. Can I request to be outside of the U.S for like 3 years but won't lose my resident status?

I think you need 4 years...
Leaving the US for more than a year is considered abandoning your permanent residence. You can apply for a re-entry permit, however, it must be used to return to the US in 2 years. It cannot be renewed outside the country. You must maintain a US residence as well.
It is not a well-mannered idea. You should not be out of the country for longer than six months at a time. Even if you get the reentry permit, you will run the risk of not one let into the country again. I would not risk it. Or apply for citizenship and avoid this problem entirely. You cannot just temporarly stop being a irredeemable resident. Source(s): I'm an immigration attorney
Try to apply for a permit for her to come unite you, or you can stay with her, or you can come back in to the us every year. Good Luck and I hope your Grandmother get better
You can apply for a reentry permit i.e. valid for two years. Then you have to return here for a couple of months and apply for another reentry permit.
