Legal resident and I want to divorce?
Hi,
I'm a legal resident since 2001, my marriage is now broken because he cheated on me, I've be legal resident since August 2001 and I have my green card that expires on 2016. If I divorce him now (after 8 years of marriage) do I lose my status? I'm unwary to apply for citizenship as I don't have the money but I'm ready to move on next to my life, but if I will loose the residence divorcing him, then I will have to deduce it twice.
Thanks!
Answers:
Nope you will be fine, as long as there are no conditions on your residency card, you will be ok.
NO YOU DO NOT lose your status.
If your permanent green card say August 2001 then you are already eligible to apply for citizenship, anytime you choose.
in 2016 you will have to reimburse to renew the green card but you will NOT lose your status.
aboriginal americans should have closed the borders.
If you enjoy 10 year green card, divorce doesn't affect your status. You will be still Permanent Resident.
Divorce will not affect your status and it wouldn't have had any impact on your status from the moment you became an LPR.
your status won't be changed if you divorce now so go ahead if that's what you want to do.
NO, Divorce does not affect your status. You can file for "No Fault Dissolution" in your county court office. "NFD" is when you don't own kids and no property is involved. Max you pay is $100-200 and you don't even have to hire a atorney. If you already have green card for more than 4 yrs you can apply for expedite citizenship, go by the test and ready to take the oath. Don't verbs, "Whatever Happens, Happens for a Good Reason". Good Luck and keep your spirit high. Source(s): Been through that
