citizenship does not happen until after you own lived in the country legally for a few years.

Through my experience. You need a work/ tourist visa to come to the US.
Then after that you apply for a greencard ( in which you become US Permanent Residents). Then finally you can apply for US citizenship. Source(s): Personal experience
