They are speeding up the immigration process for different applications while working on their backlog at the same time. I don't think immigration is at all worried in the order of the commonwealth games.
Processing time varies a lot depending on what kind of application and where on earth you are applying from. Getting a temporary work permit may take as little as a couple of months if you are within the right profession but applying as a skilled worker from some countries can take up to 6-7 years.
