Im married to an American and want to start the process of becoming an American?

My husband and I have been married 2 years. I came on a visa and when I met my presently husband I stayed( I know not the correct way to do things)

I would really like to start the process in getting a green card and afterwards my American Citizenship so I can contribute to society .

What are the steps to take and how long does everything take.

Iv checked the Gov. site but all to be exact very confusing and I have no idea where on earth to start on that site.

If you have gone though this process I would appreciate all the info you could give me.

Your spouse should hold filed an I-130 for you. If not, you start with an I-130 available here: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=c67c7f9ded54d010VgnVCM10000048f3d6a1RCRD&vgnextchannel=db029c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1RCRD

Click on the link at the bottom for instructions.

Then you hold to file an I-485 to adjust your status to legal permanent resident. Once you enjoy LPR status, you get a green card.

There are links at the bottom on instructions how to file. Make sure you read the instructions very warily. If you file incorrectly, USCIS may start removal proceedings. You should have a lawyer look over your work if you can.

Once you obtain a green card, you can apply for citizenship in 3 years using the N-400.

Sorry this information is very general, but I would be adjectives in the unauthorized practice of law if I gave you specifics. Look at the instructions on the site. You can appointment USCIS if you don't understand something, and as always, it's best to get a legal representative.
Your husband will folder for I-130 and you will file for I-485 or Adjustment of Status with the USCIS.It can take from 6 months to 2 years to process.Since you are married for 2 years already, if approved, you will be getting a 10-year green card. You can apply for citizenship after 3 years of becoming a Permanent Resident provided you remained married to your spouse and you completed the residency requirements.Otherwise, it will be 5 years.
