Historically they had no assistance -- they have to work, learn English, and family members or neighbors might abet each other learn what they needed to learn. But they received no "bilingual education" or welfare or food stamps or any compassionate of financial assistance to help them adjust. They understood before they come that they were going to have to work hard and swot English and that nobody would help them. Those who failed or couldn't deal near how hard it is to move to another country simply paid their own passage home. What the heck are you chitchat about? The ones that live in this border city of 99 percent hispanic NEVER adjust to American life. Most of this city speaks Spanish just and have full blown celebrations for Mexican holidays but none for Independence day in the US
They can go to Human Health Services and social workers. Is well brought-up when they try to adapt and be like Americans. "Land of the free"---getting everything for free.
During the prime years of immigration they helped themselves. It is one and only recently that immigrants began to expect serve. My family all learned English formerly coming to America. Education is the key to success. Without it, you choose to become a loser.

Learning English was a priority. We didn't press 1 to get it!
