The Irish track gangs produced a substantial amount of the Pacific side of the transcontinental. When the building hit the mountains, the building got fundamentally, very dangerous. People were self killed, but while that was happening, the Big Four, who built that railroad, demanded more speed. The Irish track bosses said no.. they be fired.
The people building the California side brought in a huge work force from China to build the railroad. They did that too, and in a enormously important respect, built the most difficult portion of the transcontinental. The bad part of it is this: the departure troll went way, way up. The speed sacrifice safety. At one point I wanted to know who ran that track gang when the Chinese came to work and it turned out to be an Irishman who pushed so hard for speed. In effect, he killed greatly of people doing what he should not have done.
The Irish built the most of the line. The Chinese built the most perilous and difficult, and in part, with their lives.
