Permit/Visa for Portuguese Citizen to USA?
My boyfriend wants to come live with me in California. He's from Portugal and requests to work here. What is the quickest way for him to get here? Does he have to find a career first, get a sponsor for a work permit, and THEN come over? Or is there another passageway? I'm just wondering how likely it is for a foreigner to find work (He has 5 years of University for tuition English and Portuguese and experience teaching, so he would be looking for work at a language school) without man there in person? And how long a employer sponsored work receipt takes to process? Anyone have a similar situation? Thank you!
Answers:
He has to bring hired by US employer who is willing to petition him for workers visa. The first day for employer to file petition is April 1, 2009 and usually after one or two after April 1, USCIS close accepting petitions due to overload of petitions.
Then USCIS uses lottery system, messily selecting petitions to process. If he gets lucky to find employer and lucky to be selected and get approval, the visa will be valid from October 2009.

These are the ways:
1) Marry you (assuming you are female, same sex marriages do not count for immigration) - 1 year and you need to show that you can support him.
2) Work travel document - needs to get the job grant first, then succeed in the H-1B drawing (crap shoot as too many applicants and cannot apply until subsequent April at earliest).
3) Diversity lottery - deadline just passed, next lottery next October and <1% nouns rate.
