Club/Bar wouldn't except my Passport as a valid ID?

I went to the local dive last night and hand the bouncer my passport (my drivers license is recently expired). When the bouncer looked at my passport he looked back at me like i be an idiot. I proceeded to show him my school ID my Two expired state ID's. Then he hesitantly said. "OK OK... we usually don't except federal id's but i'll let you slide this time"

is this adjectives practice to not except a passport as a proof of age?

They're so accustomed to looking at driver's license that a passport would mean nothing to them. In either shield, he could probably not detect a counterfeit document anyway. You caught him off guard and outside of his zone of comfort.
Passports should be accepted, but like another user wrote earlier, the doorman be out of his comfort zone. Like it or not, it's his call as to whether or not he lets you in near that ID. It sucks, but it's a privilege - not a right - to get into any bar even if you have a federal ID. Sorry.
They prefer IDs that have your name, date of birth and picture. That's valid! Passports?...I don't think so, It can depend on where on earth you live though...Maybe?.
