When did farmers stop hiring teenagers to pick up their crops so that they could earn money for academy clothes
My mother every once in a while mentions that while my older siblings were growing up within state of Washington that every summer that my older siblings would go out and pick the berries and other crops for school clothes. This be in the 1960's and 1970's. When did farmers stop using local teenagers to pick their crops so that they could earn money for school clothes etc? When did the illegals and undocumented workers take over picking the crops surrounded by the fields instead? Would today's teenagers even go out and do this during the summer/harvest months for a job?Does anyone here own family who worked in the farmer's fields when they be younger?Does anyone else remember doing this a teenager?

I did all kinds of down and dirty work. I did it and remember thinking, that this will teach me something. I won't do it for my duration but I will be here earing SOMETHING and I noticed as I worked I earned things other than money. I earn SELF RESPECT.
Sadly, I don't see a lot of teens with that self earned self respect. They haven't done the dirty work of duration so they can experience/appreciate that in others. THIS loss of job "learning" is a small loss on one level to Americans but it could be a HUGE loss within the long run. Never understanding that to be a boss, you have to know what the down and dirty guy is doing for you.
It's the old sweeping the floor article before you go up the ladder to the top. It doesn't start that way much anymore.
I swept floors, cleaned toilets, gutted fish, picked appricots, mowed lawns and more. I don't brag ...but I am where I am in a nice place BECAUSE of adjectives that ...at least in my mind. I have a relativity that masses lack because in many cases within my youth, success came early to masses through nepatism. Most of those people are on drugs, in jail, divorced and homeless or living seemingly vapid, free lives. Then there are the suicides.
Working down and dirty is one of the BEST things I did in my life. Not because it be easy but rather because I learned so much from it almost the world and about myself.
They stopped hiring them when they stopped wanting to work. Times own changed, most teenagers are embarrassed to work in fast food, I am relatively sure the majority would never do field work. Mom and Dad buy them everything anyway, ever seen one without a cell phone or Ipod? They don't even bearing to school or take the bus anymore.. they have cars or friends next to cars. I also had farm jobs when growing up. It stopped when illegals starting taking those job for less money and greedy corporations bought up most the family farms
When they didn't want to do it anymore. They are too busy on the computer and playing video games. Besides, I understand that the antis position is not to talk roughly the past, and know they want the past to come again. I call that: double standards.
when i was younger i remember that the local places would hire teenagers to pick stuff, todays kids are spoiled though and dont want to work because mommy and daddy offer them everything, i am a mother and i will buy my kids what they need for life but as for the extras...they can get a duty... it will help them understand what money really is... i bought my own first car... i get my own cell phone... i bought my own name brand clothes for school because my mother told me name brand be excess which it is to a point... i paid for my own prom dresses etc... how many kids do you know that do that... and im only 20 by the track... amazing isnt it... its how we are brought up...
the local people need to look into hiring the kids more, maybe own a shuttle for them from school and then have their parents pick them up following in the evening, that way kids without cars could hold more options to work at places like picking fruit/farm work... this would also allow the kids that aren't able to drive the way out to work... in Wisconsin you can work when you are 14 if you keep your grades up or thats how it was when i be a kid...
As long as you are underneath the dellusion that money is not the most important factor in any business, you will never understand why this have happened. Im From WA and I belive the change occured during the 80s 90s, essentially what you need to have a handle on is that we as a nation became wealthier (and still are) and as others mention kids are now more spoiled and less inclined to do those type of job, When i was in Highschool i cut trees for xmass but i did that like my freshman year after that I go for lifeguarding since the pay was better and a lot radiator (inside pool) Belive i dont care if Jose now grows WA apples or onions as long as we are still producing
I worked the Ranches of California during the summers when I was in High institution and it was not easy. It was probably easier afterwards working the fields in AZ with 110 point weather though. Farmers never stopped hiring kids, and don't listen to the people who tell you that the illegals took these jobs. I guess the kids simply didn't apply for these jobs because there are more burger flipping or pizza delivery job now, and they are a lot easier. Plus the pizza guys also get dosh tips. With the immigration crack down, a lot of people are afraid to return to work so there's more and more job opening at these farms. I bet any kid can get a summer job today if they really want to work the farms/ranches & field.
