In a country where on earth the vast majority is white and most illegals are not it may be perceived that race is a factor as it would be "easier to "pin-point" who may be an illegal immigrant, not singular by whites but also by non-white "legals". Most people will also consider non-white immigrants in nonspecific (legal or illegal) as being "too different" or not being up to their "standard" to come to this country. That is an associated factor. For some, yes, I believe it is a matter of see for both legal and illegal immigration. However, the negative awareness towards illegal immigration is a matter of recent US history as politicians are more willing to finally disclose how "bad" it is instead of hiding from voters the reality that they could neither address nor fix the system in a timely manner because they have realize that xenophobia, instead of hope of fixing the issue, is easier to spread amongst voters.

Well racism is viewed by most people as a shallow emotion that involves detest and is always bad. However if I was to utter that I am against more immigration to my country because many of the immigrants are from the world's fastest growing ethnic groups this would technically be a racist point of view.
