Just listened to a programme on 5 live this afternoon about immigrants?
it was about how much strain is being put o the health service, local govt, education & all public services, through them not being able to speak English and how it was costing a fortune for teaching nurses and teachers to understand basic foreign phrases to be able to do their job, also the huge costs of employing interpreters to assist them. some of them have been here for quite some time without apparently making any effort to learn English which can only make me assume that they expect us to lean their language. Do you think this is fair to the taxpayer. P.S. this is not meant to be a racist question, but only to point out another cost of our immigration fiasco

Do I think this is fair? Absolutely not. I don't think foreigners coming to America and 1)living here illegally and/or 2)refusing to adapt to our language and customs is fair at all. They would expect us to do this if we went to their country of origin! There are many benefits and such awarded to immigrants that are not awarded to Americans, and I find that simply wrong and immoral. We are the true citizens who calls this country home, and yet immigrants get more benefits from living here (legally or not!) than we do! It's infuriating that our taxpayers go towards making a better life not for ourselves, but for ungrateful immigrants who haven't earned it! I know lots of immigrants. They all speak good English. They get on with their life, don't expect anything from the state, work hard, pay taxes, obey the law, etc. Much better than the Brits who spend most of the time whinging about how bad their life is and how it's everybody else's fault!

Well the DWP pays for interpreters to accompany benefit claimants to their Medical Assessments and Benefit Appointments - I work at the DWP and I have to book them every week and I have no idea how much it costs but its obviously not cheap.
I want to know what contribution these people are making to the country - they have come here, are unable to work, unable to speak English, and are costing us a fortune in benefits, interpreters etc - how did they get in in the first place? The USA is a big place. We can handle a handful of Hispanics, some Africans, a few Germans, a bit of the French and the list goes on.
We can not admit 50% or MORE Hispanics (mostly from Mexico) and then add more ILLEGALS (mostly from Mexico) and expect NOT to have a problem.
We are going to have to hurt these people and ask them to leave (illegals) and slow down or stop Hispanic admittance, until this problem of Language is resolved. There are simply TOO MANY OF THEM here.
Anything less and our culture and country has been and will continue to be demeaned for English speakers who are natives to America.

Yes there are strains on services, but this is really something that Central UK.gov should be dealing with. I'm talking about towns such as Peterboro' who have seen a massive increase in immigration from Poland in recent times.
The Poles take the jobs that the locals don't want to do. For example, I saw on program on TV about this, a farmer was offering £8+ an hour to pick caulflowers on his land. The local lads were not interested and instead preferred to loaf about the town drinking cans of beer all day and drawing doll money.
Meanwhile, fit young Polish workers were snapping up jobs such as the one above and working flat out 12 hours a day.
All of these Polish immigrant workers are paying NI and Tax. The problem is their tax money is going directly to central UK.gov who then fail to redistribute that money back to the communities where such folk live and work. Result, strain on everything in the community, schools, hospitals, fuzz etc.
When a town such as Peterboro' knows how many immigrants it has got and when these figs are presented to central UK.gov, it should then compensate the town by pouring in more wonga. An annual per-capita sum, etc.
I blame the Labour UK.gov for all the problems concerning immigration into the UK. They have failed to plan properly. They expected about 60,000 Poles, instead we got nearly a million.
Jobs are not a problem here in UK. The economy, in spite of the bad news from the stock markets, is actually booming. UK is one massive construction site right now and we need all the workers we can get.
If the Brits themselves won't move from a poor job location to a rich job location, as in 'on yer bike', then they only have themselves to blame when immigrants find jobs and they don't.
People have got to be prepared to move to where the jobs and money is/are.
I live in London - no choice, I was born here. Never had a problem finding a job -million of jobs and we take anyone and we don't care where they come from.

It's interesting that this morning's news was saying that half of the 1 million recent Polish immigrants have already gone back to Poland and farmers and warehouse type employers are going to be struggling to fill jobs.
there is A LOT of misinformation about immigrants and benefits which naturally causes resentment but most of it is NOT TRUE.
Frankly many Polish people don't want to stay here with their families - given the numbers of kids who can't read and write when they leave school, the yob culture and racism why would they?
I do agree people SHOULD learn the language and that includes English people - just look at the grammar and phraseology used in Yahoo answers

There's plenty of English people that don't know how to speak the language that's supposed to be their mother tongue. The grammar and spelling on this site are often bloody awful, to be frank. I wonder how much it costs to translate jobless yob that can't be bothered to stack shelves at Tesco? Great contribution they are making to the economy, eh? Let's get something straight, we live in a free market economy. If the jobs weren't available, the immigrants you complain of wouldn't take them up. If they weren't much better at doing them than the natives, the employers wouldn't hire them. There is a big problem with native workers as they do have a tendancy to not turn up for work on Mondays. No such problem with an immigrant worker. They turn up for work and do a great job when they get there, and are not sloping off for an extended tea break at 10 a.m.
As for the education system, it is considered by many teachers that multicultural classes are a great opportunity for learning about other peoples and cultures. In my experience children are very supportive of each other and help each other to learn. Children from other countries are more apprecaitive of an education system like ours, are more motivated to learn and have higher levels of achievment.
Native children with a varied class also have less of a xenophobic attitude, and a greater capacity for understanding. Learning with immigrant children is advantageous, especially if a proper work ethic rubs off on the native children, something which they are unlikely to encounter in their own culture.
Immigration would only be a fiasco if the amount of tax and national insurance collected from these people, and their contribution to the wider economy fell far short of the costs involved with accomodating them.

I have a Chinese restaurant I eat at down the street. The mother and father know 100% eEnglish, and they have been teaching their 4 yr. old since she could talk.
Although they have a daughter of six who always spoke in Chinese till about a year and a half ago.
Should they be deported since the six year old is horrible at English, but her school district (whom is searching) can't find her a teacher to learn English. Her parents try, but she learned to speak Chinese for so many years.
I live in an area that has a lot of established immigrants living in it. They refuse to hire anyone not of their nationality to do any work for them, such as gardening services, house cleaning, contstruction, etc. They have lived in their houses for more than 40 - 50 years but have never learned more than a few simple English words. Several of the families work together - they installed cigarette machines in businesses and stores and simply re-stocked and collected the money. They have never felt the need to learn the language of the country they chose to live in. They still spend part of each year in their homeland which is still the country of their birth. They also plan to be buried in their birth country. In the meantime, they use all of the services in Canada I think that a basic comprehension of English should be a prerequisite to being able to immigrate. For those already here, you have to learn English within a certain period of time or be deported. We would save billions! My wife learned English before immigrating here(good thing as I don't speak Mandarin!). Where is the ACLU? It is discriminatory to only help people of certain languages and not others(especially Spanish)! Why not sue the government to put everything in all 6700 languages or make English the official language? Why does our government discriminate? As you can tell I'm in the US!
