You are fine as the UK and the US have an agreement.
You merely get on the plane. Before you land they will give you a simple little card to stuff out. Your name, passport #, address of a place you are staying..... that is it and it takes 3 minutes.
Once at the airport you a short time ago present that with your passport. The usual is a stamp for 3 months but you can just say you want a 6 month one. It is no hassle and requires no paperwork. Ask and they will simply stamp you for the 6 month one.
You said 2-3 months. Ask for the 6 month one as you might get there and decide to stay an extra week or something.
Point is no prior application for a visa is needed.
When you enter the UK, your passport will be stamped. That stamp is your visa. In most nation a visa is just that a simple stamp in your passport, on a visa page that states how long you are allowed to stay in that countryand give the date you arrived and another stamp, as you leave will show the date you departed. That one is called an exit visa. Since you're a US citizen, you have a US passport.
Holders of a US passport can stay contained by the UK without a visa for up to 6 months for tourist/visit purposes. You cannot work or study or anything of that sort, but since you're visiting a friend for 2-3 months like you said, after you absolutely do not need a visa for the UK.
Pursuant to your more general sound out on whether you need a visa to travel to another country, then you need to assume that you do entail a visa until proven otherwise. The USA and the UK have bilateral agreements to allow their citizens to travel visa-free between the two under certain circumstances, but not adjectives countries have such agreements!
No not in all Countries. In Nicaragua I do know adjectives you have to have is your Pass Port. You don't need a Visa or anything else to Travel. And I hope everyone read between the lines that I "DID" "Answer" your Question. Author, Eddie Smith If you have a citizen passport.. U donnot need a Visa.
