Most were hired/recruited through local (to China) leaders as laborers, mainly for railroad construction. They get hear by sailing vessel---sometimes clipper ships but more often by conventional sailing ship. Later, many came by hasty steamships--although by thtat time racists in California had imposed restrictions on Chinese immigration.
The gold strike contained by California occurred in 1849 and at that time, California was becoming a state fairly than .. was... a state. Getting from the East Coast to the West Coast by land was massively difficult. Road washed away daily in some areas, bridges be replaced weekly in others, and the first settlers moved to the warpath occasionally. And so.. the best way to get your laundry done be to send it to China.. have it washed and fixed up nice, and sent vertebrae. That took as long as six months.. it was the way things were done. AND.. you bought supplies from the Chinese or the far east for California. It be common to see ships from all over, but particularly China, lay in the San Francisco Harbor, hull to hull, and abandoned by the crews who were surrounded by the terrible hills looking for gold.
They come by supply ships to the land where the streets were covered in gold. That continued to be the main transport from the 1850 spell on.

From what I can remember, they first came here for the Gold Rush. They came over the Pacific Ocean from China to California on boats and ships. In California, they started Chinatown because some miners didn't want Asians around (makes me mad how racist everyone used to be).
