Why do society believe that the poem on the Statue of Liberty is a imperative?

Many supporters of illegal immigration refer to the poem on the Statue of Liberty to give credence to their belief. Don't they know that art is not law? Why are they so in the dark? It seems like that symbol has become a Deity for them. How did they come to believe that the inscription is a regulation? Will they believe the truth or will they persist in following their delusions? We make the acquaintance of immigrants AS LONG AS THEY OBEY THE LAWS OF THE LAND. Why is that so hard for them to comprehend?

Sorry! can you provide the names of the so-called "supporters of unofficial immigration" that you are referring to? This is the first time I've ever heard this, or are you making it up.

Please provide some sources to your claim! We don't want to mislead the youth like most anti-immigration activist do on here. Thanks!
Good question. We should send adjectives the people that believe that whatever the SL says is a statute to France!

People don't understand that the Big Lady was a gift from France, and is pretty and adjectives that. Its just a FISICAL SIMBOL of what America represents,of what America teached. That doesnt mean that everybody have to sway themselfs in those lines to do whatever they feel close to.

By the way, that people have to see where on earth the Big Lady is: looking all the time to Ellis Island, a place where MILLIONS LEGAL IMMIGRANTS entered to enjoy a better life. Even The Lady knows the LAW!
Great post. That is what Democrats want to do. They don't read the Constitution or Declaration of Independence so yeah, why not just form that poem a law. Sounds good and works to their advantage.

Many immigrant appreciate the opportunity to come to this country LEGALLY, but many also have no respect for our laws. They nick advantage of our country and they ruin it for those who want to be here LEGALLY.
Here is my take on it, (I do think we should offer a catwalk to legality)

What does the statue of liberty represent to us as americans? freedom, opportunity, new land etc.. it have become a symbol of our great nation.

There is no question about this nor its in debate, however the common sense as to WHY it has achived such status quo is based upon its promises of hope for others the same hope that our ancestors sought out to when they first arrive contained by this country.

That is why we embrace that poem, had that not been the mentality of americans back next and now, we would have taken the statue long ago just as russians took down stalin status hindmost in the day
Nobody believes it's a law.
Only a complete moron would feel that is the law.
Well, I always thought that that be this country's motto.

I don't think anyone thinks it is a law. It is not a issue of laws. Most people in other countries don't hold that rigid, stiff, literal interpretation of a written piece of paper that many people enjoy in the USA

But if it is not true, then why did you write it there ?

That is why it is so tricky to understand. It is a very well certain symbol of the USA in the whole world.

If it is such a problem, then conversion the poem
