Since I have married an American and he lives in Canada, I can answer this.
You can come to Canada and get married, no problem. Wouldn't suggest proverb that at the border though... Immigration guys get a little edgy with that. You are coming up to call in friends for a couple months and travel around Canada ... Your passport allows you to stay upto 6months in Canada depending on whether or not the customs guy stamps a date in it. If he does then prior to that expiry date you enjoy to file for an extension to stay.
So you get married, now if you hold loose ends to tie up in the States you can go back to the States and do that. If not you can stay as long as your passport allows and/or report the extension.
Your spouse will file a spousal sponsorship package(paperwork done within Canada - you living with her) or (paperwork done outside Canada - you living contained by the States). Depending on whether or not you are willing to live apart for a bit and travel back and forth.
Now if you can find a job prior to adjectives of this and get a work visa then it makes your duration alot easier. Because while all the paperwork is going on, you are not allowed to work. And trust me finding a company to hire you and getting a file number from Human Resources is impossible.
If not later the spousal sponsorship package from within Canada is the way to progress. You can stay as long as you have paperwork in the process..."implied status". It isn't recommended that you leave once this process have started. Things tend to go to the bottom of the pile if you do, they usually wonder what is going on. So, your spouse should be able to provide the necessities for you while everything is in the works. I suggest getting extra medical insurance prior to anyone here because depending on the province you won't have coverage right off the bat. Everything will have to be rewarded for up front and then reimbursed later. You will need a police pass from every state you lived in over 6months I believe(check the time on that) and you will also need an FBI certificate as well(make sure when you apply for it you put a date needed by or it will embezzle months) Your medical can be done here in canada, and make sure you have proper photos, passport photos won't cut it for your application. Make sure you own a detailed work history, etc and if you are going to take a honeymoon...do it before you start the paper work or you will enjoy to wait.
Permanent Resident are required to maintain a residency a minimum of 3 years(I think) before you can write the citizenship tryout. Everyday you are in Canada prior to getting your PR Card is a half day. You can do adjectives of this without a lawyer, I did and we had everything done within about a year and a half. Oh yes if you submit paperwork within Canada and you haven't get a work permit yet...Put this paper work at the train of your spousal sponsorship because if you don't they will deny it right away...called and Open Work Permit...allows you to work for anyone(well almost).
Costs - around $2,000 after all is said and done. Make sure you send surrounded by everything together...makes it easier. Takes more time but in the long run nothing get lost. Make sure you document your relationship, phone calls emails photos, just in luggage.
Use the document checklists and the guides that are there. This should give you everything you need to know...anything else basically email me
First you need to apply for permanent residency, then you live within Canada for 3 years before you can apply for citizenship.
